Charlie’s Aunt is launching a range of vintage “make-do-and-mend” inspired sewing patterns in 2010 following the recent release of the third book, Making Vintage Accessories. The paper patterns are being published through Indygo Junction, the first two of which have just been launched at the spring quilt fair in the US. Publishing through Indygo Junction will enable us to take the patterns to a wider audience and to capitalise on the current resurgence of interest in sewing crafts worldwide. We will also publish our own range of PDF patterns, which will be sold via Etsy. This will enable us to introduce new designs more frequently.
The paper patterns will contain two different variations of each bag style. Some will also have instructions for trims, such as rose corsages, that can be used in other fashion accessory projects. Each paper pattern will contain:
- Full-sized pattern templates ready to cut out and use
- Well illustrated, detailed and easy to follow instruction sheets
- A colour cover sheet with photographs of all the possible styles in the pack
- A plastic grip-seal bag to keep the cut pieces in
The e-patterns will be in PDF format and at this stage, everything will be hand-drawn, illustrated and scanned, in keeping with the personal and home-made ethos of the patterns of the 1930s, 40s and 50s, which form the basis for the inspiration behind the collection. We will be able to add new styles regularly and email them direct to the customer. Working in this way, and with a mix of paper and e-patterns, will enable us to cover all preferences.
The sewing patterns will offer easily constructed simple designs, varied by adding different pleated panels, pockets and trims to change the look. One of the first e-patterns for example will feature a 1940s inspired modern beret with self-fabric rose trim in boiled wool, and a cheeky retro baker girl cap in tweed.
Below are a few images giving a sneak preview of some of the designs that will feature in the patterns. Please click on an image for a larger view. Under these are the covers of the first patterns for Indygo Junction. For more information on the patterns, email Emma via the contacts page.
